Village mourns passing of two residents

It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of two of Piccotts End’s best-known residents. Michael Tate, (pictured) who lived at 121 Piccotts End, and Beryl Wyatt, who lived at Mill Close, had resided in the village for more than 20 years. Beryl was 94 and Michael 78.

Medieval cottages

Residents win final round of planning battle

Residents who opposed plans to erect a house at the rear of the Medieval Cottages (pictured) have won what they hope is the decisive battle. Led by Professor Tim Blinko they heard the good news this month that an appeal against an earlier decision to reject plans for a 4-bedroom house at the rear of the Medieval Cottages had failed.

Lane planning fears allayed

Fears that a planning application would open Piccotts End Lane to through traffic have laid to rest. Yvonne Metcalfe, pictured, who lives at Amethyst Cottage (No 42) was alarmed to receive a letter from Herts County Council about an application to allow the lane to become a ‘Byway Open to All Traffic.’

Twelfth Night Natter

Residents came out for one last festive fling at the Marchmont Arms on Twelfth Night. Social secretary Annette Harrison (pictured here on the right of the gathering) welcomed many faces old and new, including Ruud and Julie (2nd and 3rd right) from Holland who are celebrating their first year in the village and Tim and Julia Blinko (1st and 2nd left). Caroline, Lynne, Ena and Paula added to the post-festive spirit.

Doctor departs

January 2016
One of Piccotts End’s most familiar faces has left the village. Dr Keith Hodge, known to many through his Fernville surgery, moved out this autumn. He and his wife Gill have relocated to Bath although Dr Hodge will continue to work as head of the practice during the week.

Fireworks party is bang-on!

November 2015
More than 70 residents enjoyed pork rolls and pyrotechnics at the annual village fireworks party. The event, which had to be postponed earlier in the month owing to bad weather, took place at Marchmont Cottage with fireworks provided by Fantastic Fireworks.

Safari Supper is a dinner winner!

October 2015
This year’s Safari Supper was one of the best attended of recent years with more than 20 residents and guests enjoying each other’s company and cooking. Big thanks to Carole Cohen and Margaret Stanier for organising such a successful evening. From starters and main courses at various homes the party ended with a surprise visit to the Medieval Cottages, courtesy of the owners Karen Murphy and Alison Wright.

Swallows leave Mary with a chilly portent

Forget what the Met Office says, Piccotts End resident Mary Wiedman has her own way of predicting the weather. In a letter to the Daily Mail Mary says that for the first time in 44 years the swallows nesting in her garage were gone by the middle of August instead of their usual departure date in mid September.

Singer Julia stars in blockbuster movie!

September 2015
The Martian, the new Hollywood space thriller starring Matt Damon, features another star performer, our very own Piccotts End resident Julia Blinko! Julia is a member of the Bach Choir who sing on the film’s soundtrack.  Julia says she has been sworn to secrecy since recording it earlier this year.

Plans for 350 new homes & traveller site ‘are pretty dire’

Plans  for up to 350 homes and a new travellers’ site in fields adjacent to Piccotts End have been described as ‘pretty dire’ by PERA secretary Michael Nidd (pictured). Dacorum’s latest local planning framework documents show how a new roundabout will be built on Link Road to access the development beneath Grovehill.
