Road testing the new 8am coffee shop in the Old Town
I’m always full of admiration for all those hard-working, enterprising folk who are up before the crack of dawn to provide a service. Like the lovely ladies at Amanda Jane’s in Queen’s Square who get up at 2am to travel to London to buy fresh fruit for the people of Adeyfield. Not up quite that early but still daft o’clock is the Old Town’s newest entrepreneur, Lesley. She is setting the pace for early risers with her open all hours coffee shop Epicure. This used to be known as Coffee and Cake and was very popular with mums and babies. It still is but Lesley wants to tap into the early morning market with an 8am start seven days a week. I went along to try it out. I arrived at 8.15 and sure enough, there was Lesley and her young team brewing the coffee and laying out breakfast pastries. No bacon baps yet for that authentic smell of breakfast but perhaps they’ll come, I ordered a flat white and a pain au chocolat. The coffee was excellent but if I’m honest, the pain au chocolat was a bit tired. If I could make a polite suggestion, the best croissants and pain au chocolat are the ones you find freshly baked at railway stations. There’s nothing to compare with the aroma of a freshly baked croissant! I wish Epicure every success. The early bird catches the coffee!
