An HGV accident on the A4146 last year

The Leighton Buzzard road, notorious for the number of HGVs thundering through each day, is soon to have a weight limit imposed. Herts County Highways have confirmed that a section of the A4146 is to be downgraded from an A road to a B road, the B440, and will  have a limit of 7.5 tonnes (your medium sized lorry) between Water End and the Link Road roundabout. They haven’t said how this will be enforced since, if an HGV gets beyond Water End, there is nowhere to turn round. However PERA secretary Michael Nidd believes that warning notices will need to be posted least at Dagnall if not further back. More than 300 HGVs currently use the road every day. The change has come about as a result of the new link road between the M1 and Leighton Buzzard, enabling HGVs to head for the M1 instead of Hemel Hempstead. Further details can be found here.
